About Inconvenient Youth

For Adults     For Educators

"Inconvenient Youth is a community of teenagers taking action to address the climate crisis."

At Inconvenient Youth (IY) we work based on three central principles:

1) We believe that climate change is a crisis that affects everyone and, because we are all affected, we must all be part of the solution.

2) We believe that as many ideas and actions as possible are necessary to solve the climate crisis.

3) We believe that teens can be leaders in stopping climate change now.

1) We believe that climate change is a crisis that affects everyone and, because we are all affected, we must all be part of the solution.
Climate change is one of the most important issues of this generation. It affects everyone. Between new scientific discoveries and the ever changing political scene, there's always new information to stay on top of. We'll keep you in the loop on the latest science, news, and current developments (check out our blog). We also have all the background information you need to be a climate change expert.

2) We believe that as many ideas and actions as possible are necessary to solve the climate crisis.
All revolutions have a few things in common. They need big ideas to change the way people think and see the world. They also need lots of people to join together and change they way they live and the choices they make. Its time for youth to lead the revolution. So, we set up the site for you to share two main things: Actions and Ideas.

Actions: There are so many things we can do to be friendlier to the environment. You probably do a lot already without even thinking. Walk somewhere instead of driving? Recycle? Get your groceries in reusable bags instead of plastic? Let us know! Every little bit counts. Submit your actions, and tell your friends to join them. Then find others on the site that you want to do and pledge your commitment. It might not seem like a big deal when one person takes action, but when thousands do, we can change the world.

Ideas: If you see a change that could make your community (city, school, or neighborhood) a greener, healthier place to live and you know how to make it happen, submit your idea to us. Each month (beginning in March 2010), all of our members have the chance to find the ideas they like and let us know it's a good idea by clicking the "like" button next to each idea. At the end of each month, we collect the best ones and you vote on them. Your votes - combined with a variety of other factors - decide which idea wins our full support to make it a reality. We can't wait to see what happens!

3) We believe that teens can be leaders in stopping climate change now.
We know you're passionate. We know you have great ideas. We know you're ready to take action and do something now. Inconvenient Youth is the place for you to be a leader and an activist. Make it your own! We're not worried about who you'll be in ten years. We promise to help make your voice heard now. Because we know its a powerful voice and that together, we're going to accomplish great things.

Adults

"Inconvenient Youth is a community of teenagers taking action to address the climate crisis."

At Inconvenient Youth, our goal is to empower young people to become environmental leaders. The climate crisis is one of the most pressing issues of our time, and we believe that teens can make a real and meaningful difference now. By providing an informational resource, a supportive community, and a venue to share ideas and take part in group action, we are creating a place for teens to explore their passions and take action for a cause inspires them. Encourage teens you know to be inconvenient!

The Climate Project

Inconvenient Youth is an initiative of The Climate Project (TCP). As a program of the Alliance for Climate Protection, TCP's mission is to educate the public about the harmful effects of climate change and to work toward solutions at a grassroots level worldwide.

TCP supports more than 3,000 diverse and dedicated volunteers worldwide. These volunteers are known as TCP Presenters and have been personally trained by Nobel Laureate and former Vice President Al Gore to deliver an updated version of the slide show featured in the Academy Award-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth.

TCP Presenters have delivered 70,000 presentations and have reached a combined global audience of 7.3 million people. Presentations are customized and frequently revised to include the latest climate science and can be requested free of charge by any size group or organization.

Official TCP branches are located in the United States, Australia, Canada, India, Spain, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, and Mexico. TCP's global headquarters is located in Nashville, Tennessee.

Looking for more ways to be involved? Encourage your students to be inconvenient! Inconvenient Youth encourages collaboration with classrooms and schools through teachers and service learning opportunities. School green clubs or environmental clubs are a great way for teenagers to take action in their local community and usually require a faculty adviser. For more ideas on how you can get involved, read our Educators Handbook.
